McKinzy Moves to Minnesota
Wyandotte (KS) quarterback Dimonic McKinzy has been looking forward to this moment. As he geared up for his move to campus and the start of the spring semester at Minnesota, the soon-to-be college freshman couldn't hide his excitement. "It's just a tremendous blessing that only comes from God," McKinzy said of finishing high school a semester early. "It's a great experience. Not a lot of guys get to graduate high school. Getting ready for college is a big deal, and I want to make sure I've got everything I need." Just days before loading his things and heading to Minneapolis, the Gophers QB was still trying to put it all in perspective. "It's an ‘awe' moment, like, wow," he said, a smile spreading across his face. "I'm still trying to bring it in. it hasn't hit me yet, it really hasn't. All the hard work, all the previous work I've put in has paid off for what's about to go down. It's a beginning." After a standout junior season for the Bulldogs, McKinzy was even better as a senior. The 6-foot, 200-pound dual-threat had 31 total touchdowns in 2012, with 25 of them coming through the air. In his final year at Wyandotte, he completed 53% of his passes for 2,527 yards and 26 TDs, with another 519 yards and nine scores on the ground. Asked about the transition to the Big Ten, the three-star prospect believes his skills will translate well to the college game. "Working with my coach, Skip Stizell, since I was in sixth grade, all my footwork and mechanics, I know I can use it, regardless. I can fall back on that, as well as having my God-given talent as a dual threat. I can make plays and escape danger." As he looked back on his high school career, McKinzy was also looking ahead. He talked about the new semester, and how it would mark the first time he's left home for an extended length of time. "It's not going to be the first time," he said of being away from his family. "It's going to be the first time for this long. It's not going to be that hard for me, because I can adapt to settings and backgrounds. This is what I wanted."
