After in-home visit on Monday, Lapeer East (Mich.) linebacker commits to EMU. He talks about the relationships with new coaches and the keys to his commitment.

Eastern Michigan has been picking up a flurry of commitments lately and it continued that with linebacker Kyle Rachwal.

The Lapeer East (Mich.) senior picked the Eagles on Monday after taking his official visit two weekends ago.

“The biggest thing was meeting Coach (Chris) Creighton, that was really the thing that locked it up for me the most,” Rachwal said. “When I met him, he was really a guy that I wanted to bleed for, sweat for and have him lead me into battle.”

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker knew Ypsilanti was the best fit for him when he first met Creighton after his hire, saying it took 10 or 15 minutes with him to feel the fit.

Still, Rachwal wanted to see who the Eagles defensive coordinator would be and an in-home visit Monday with the newly hired Brad McCaslin finalized it.

”He came for an in-home visit yesterday and he was a guy that I wanted to play for,” he said. “I told him I wanted to commit, so I did.”

Rachwal said talking X’s and O’s with McCaslin and knowing where he fits into the defensive scheme was huge for his decision.

“He sees me as an outside backer in their 3-4 defense, which is something that I like because all other schools were looking at me as an inside backer, but he sees me as a versatile backer,” Rachwal said. “That’s something I believe I can as well. He liked how much I knew about the game, we sat down and talked scheme and strategy for an hour and a half. He said the sky is the limit for me, but it’s about how I will work.”

While he plans to come in expecting to play early, he is looking forward to the opportunity to move into the next phase of life.

“Just the opportunity to start over and start something new,” he said. “Meeting new people and having an opportunity to start the next part of my life.

”When I get into college, it’s as hard as I want to work and set that for myself. I’m excited to see what I can do.”
