The 6' 4", 207-pound do-it-all athlete had been to Ole Miss plenty of
times in the past. This trip was about getting to see some new things that he
had not seen before.
"I just want to see a lot of the new things they just built," Jay Johnson said. "I just wanted to have fun, basically, and I had a really good time. I got to see all of their new facilities from their weight room, to meeting room, to nutrition room, to the locker room, just everything. It is all brand new and really nice."
What stood out about the trip?
"I just like the way I fit in with their coaches. I like how they like to have fun. I just like how they keep things loose and always joking around. I just fit in good with them. They make me feel at home. To be honest it was better than I was expecting it to be. I like how they explained everything and just the way they acted."
Jay plays everything from kick returner, safety, linebacker, defensive end, receiver to running back for Bruce but Ole Miss likes him on defense.
"We went over their defensive sets and they want me to play like a safety/linebacker spot. It's called husky or something like that."
Ole Miss and MSU have already offered the '13 All-State standout. Anymore schools showing interest?
"Nothing really. I got a letter from Memphis. They want me to come to their Jr Day but I doubt I will go. Ole Miss came by about a week ago. I like Hugh Freeze. He is a good motivator speaker. That is basically it."
Jay committed to MSU early in December and already feels the pressure from the locals about where he should and should not attend college on the next level.
"Everybody around my side of town that pulls for Ole Miss. Just like I tell them. Even though I committed I still have a whole another year to make up my mind. I will not make a final decision until this time next year. But yea, I already feel a lot of pressure. You know Bruce is divided. There are a lot of State fans and a lot of Ole Miss fans."
What does stick out the most about Ole Miss right now?
"They are a good Christian team. I will put it like that. I came up there during the season and watched practice. Everything was good and organized and Christian based. I did not hear one curse word out there in practice. I like Hugh Freeze. He is a good motivator speaker and a good Christian man."
What about MSU?
"They have a good atmosphere down there. I like their atmosphere down there. I have not visited down there much. I have been going to Ole Miss my whole life basically. I really have not had a chance to get down to State much, but I recently got a chance to go see them against Alabama. I am hoping to get down there this summer to get a better feel for it. I will be there next weekend for their Jr Day. I am sure I will be trying to compare the two schools (OM/MSU) but I really do not know what I am going to be looking to compare until I get there."
