Kirkland receives flurry of offers

2015 four-star linebacker Darrin Kirkland of Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence Central talks about the slew of recent offers that have come his way, plus what other heavyweight schools that are showing interest.

Since the calendar year has turned its page to 2015, four-star linebacker Darrin Kirkland of Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence Central has added Duke, Tennessee, North Carolina State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Penn State to his offer list.

Most recently, Penn State extended an offer.

"I know that it's a very exciting program," Kirkland said. "Coach Franklin has taken over, and there is a lot going on with that program right now. He's taking it into a good direction."

"I talked with the staff, and they're very excited about me," Kirkland said. "They think that I could have an impact there fairly early. It's an honor to hear from such a prestigious school known for its linebackers, like Penn State. And, they think I that fit that mold of linebackers."

Kirkland was offered by Ole Miss a day earlier than Penn State, and he's already developed a rapport with the Rebels' staff.

"Ole Miss was one of the first schools to recruit me after the Sept. 1 period," Kirkland said. "I have really built a good relationship with Coach (Tom) Allen, who used to coach in Indianapolis at Ben Davis High School. I definitely want to check that school out."

Two other programs expressing a considerable amount of interest include Notre Dame and Michigan.

"[Notre Dame assistant] Coach (Mike) Elston tells me that he really likes me as a player," Kirkland said. "He says he's confident about me. He says that Notre Dame usually gets the top guy each year from Indiana, and those players really contribute to their success. I want to visit this spring, but I haven't narrowed down a date a yet."

Kirkland has yet to narrow his list, but is hoping to do so before the summertime.

"I'm still open," Kirkland said. "I haven't narrowed down anything yet, but I will probably come out with a top eight or ten around the time school gets out for the summer."

Kirkland will visit Tennessee this upcoming weekend. He is a four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 14 outside linebacker in the class of 2015.
