West Monroe sophomore quarterback Jon Randall Belton got his first SEC offer yesterday...

Mississippi State invited West Monroe 2016 QB Jon Randall Belton to junior day and offered him a scholarship. Belton is impressed with MSU quarterback Dak Prescott, a fellow north Louisiana native. He's also driven to have a breakout junior season after an injury shortened his 2013 campaign.

LSU holds a verbal from four-star running back Nicholas Brossette, the state's top-ranked junior, who committed to play in the Under Armour All-American Game. Brossette cited Tim Williams and Garrett Brumfield's experiences at the UA game when he discussed the decision. Williams is a former teammate at University Lab, while Brumfield is a senior LSU signee who opened a ton of holes for Brossette the past three years. Texas offered Brossette this week.

Tulane extended a pair of offers to McKinley prospects this week. Kirk Louis, a middle linebacker, and Keeyon Smart (OL) are both juniors at the large Baton Rouge school. Smart is a 6-foot-5, 300-pounder with a previous offer from Louisiana Tech. Both were at Tulane yesterday to watch practice, as was four-star John Curtis Christian offensive tackle Willie Allen (2016), who also garnered an offer.

The Bears were well-represented at this month's CORE6 Showcase in Metairie, with outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid Javahn Fergurson and defensive back Trevell Johnson each showing out. Fergurson's weight has increased nearly 20 pounds over the past year. He received linebacker MVP and also wreaked havoc at defensive end at Joe Yenni Stadium. The 6-1 1/2, 225-pounder was money in one-on-one coverage versus the running backs.

Johnson is a thick corner in the 5-foot-9, 185 to 190-pound range. He possesses an impressive burst. Johnson earned Overall MVP honors over some big names.

A trio of Wildcats traveled to the Lone Star State this weekend to visit Texas and Texas A&M. Four-star DB Xavier Lewis, three-star DB Antonio Parks and RB Nigel Anderson (two offers) trekked to Texas first for junior day. Lewis is a former LSU commitment who plays quarterback at East Saint John. Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech both offered Parks this week. Arizona State and Tulane are on Anderson's offer sheet.

Teurlings Catholic is set for the future at quarterback with sophomore Cole Kelley, who measures in the 6-foot-5 to 6-foot-6 range. Kelley scorched the nets for 31 points in a basketball game last week. That accounted for approximately half of the Rebels' scoring output.

Louisiana is flush with 2015 wide receivers with nice size. Tyron Johnson (6-2), Terrell Chatman (6-3), Stanley Morgan (6-1), Hunter Register (6-4), Darius Williams (6-2), Rickey Preston (6-1), Kendall Harrison (6-2), Jaquel Gant (6-2), Jazz Ferguson (6-5) and Michael Chigbu (6-2) will rival the 2014 WR group in the Boot State for supremacy.

The 2014 class has the edge at the top -- two five-stars in Devante Noil and Malachi Dupre -- but the 2015 class is probably deeper overall. A new name to watch is 6-4 Stephen Guidry from Point Coupee Central, who is set to get his first offer this week, according to VarsityPreps' Courtney Walker and PCC head coach Cleotha Johnigan.

This event will be held next Saturday in the Crescent City. Watch for Saint Paul's 2015 WR Jalen McCleskey, who intends to better his score from a Florida SPARQ combine earlier this month. McCleskey posted one of the top ratings at the Florida combine. He's still waiting for his initial offer. His father played at Tennessee...will the Volunteers be first to pull the trigger?

Louisiana Tech was first to offer Northwood-Shreveport defensive tackle LaDante Davenport. The Cajuns are also high on the junior.

Southern Miss made the third offer to Loreauville 2015 WR Rhashid Bonnette.

Texas offered 2016 four-star WR Mykel Jones (Patterson). Penn State also offered Jones.

Arizona hired Sean Patterson, older brother of Wildcats' QB commit Shea Patterson, as a graduate assistant. Shea is a sophomore at Calvary Baptist, which won its first state championship in 2013.

Destrehan RB Kirk Merritt met with LSU head coach Les Miles yesterday. Miles indicated the Tigers will offer if Merritt has a good camp this summer. It will be interesting to see what position the Tigers have in mind for Merritt, as two backs (David Ducre and Brossete) are already committed and a third spot is reserved for Catholic-Baton Rouge four-star Derrius Guice.
