Houston NFTC: Defensive Preview

Du'Vonta Lampkin

A look at some of the premiere names on the defensive side coming to the Nike Football Training Camp at Houston Kinkaid on Sunday...

Defensive Line

Du'Vonta Lampkin, a 6-foot-4 monster exploded on to the recruiting scene with an eye popping performance at last year's NFTC. And his recruitment spiked heading in to his junior season. he picked up offers, but made a commitment to play at Oklahoma. His size and strength are hard to match up with and when motivated he has great explosion.

He may not be a four-star quite yet, but Kinglsey Keke has been a prospect who has been racking up offers like one here recently. In the past seven days he has added offers form both Texas and Oklahoma. he plays defensive end, but with his size he is likely headed for the interior in college.

Class of 2016 prospect Ed Oliver will be pushing to be the best overall prospect in attendance. He uses a combination of speed and power to blow past offensive linemen. He is not just a gap plugging defender, he can put an abundance of pressure on an offensive backfield. He plays low and wins the leverage battle. He plays beyond his years as far as technique and skill. It is scary to think what he could possibly develop in to by the time his senior year comes.

Linebacker

Leading the charge is Cameron Townsend, a speedy linebacker from Ridge Point. He is good in pass coverage assignments and can cover slot receivers. Additionally, he flies to the football and is aggressive against the run. He is a big-hitter and a sound tackler. He is that new age style of linebacker who is not a liability against the run or the pass.

TCU commit Alec Dunham from Coldspring-Oakhurst, Texas City's D'Vonta Hinton and Clear Lake's Nathan Fox are also set to attend.

Defensive Backs

Leading the group will be West Orange-Stark safety Deionte Thompson, who is already committed to play in the SEC at Alabama. A long and rangy defensive back prospect, who is good in coverage and is not afraid to come up and make a hit. He is tall, long, and has pretty good speed for his size. Covers ground quickly and plays the ball very well in the air. He has knack for making plays on the ball and knocking it away or getting the interception.

Nacogdoches corner Jaylon Lane has been on fire lately on the recruiting trail. Offers have come in from a who's who. He is another corner with plus height and good ball skills. His teammate and Class of 2016 standout Brandon Jones is also slated to make an appearance.

Houston Lamar's Holton Hill played on a team with a number of other top tier division one recruits in the defensive backfield, but was still able to get his shine. A great coverage guy, who will lay the wood.

Class of 2016 cornerback Jared Mayden will be coming in for this event. He is one of the standouts in that class.
