Houston NFTC: Top Defensive Performers

Ed Oliver

Scout.com looks at top performers on the defensive side of the ball at the Nike Football Training Camp in Houston...

DT Ed Oliver - 2016 - Spring (Texas) Westfield
Oliver is something special. He looks trim at around 265 pounds. He plays with tremendous leverage and power. Using quickness to get linemen off balance and then power to finish them off. Great hand placement and smarts.

S Deionte Thompson - 2015 - West (Texas) Orange-Stark
Not too much to say about Thompson that has not been said. He can run, cover and has the size to match up well with many receivers. Should develop in to something special at Alabama, where is he is already committed.

S Deontay Anderson - 2016 - Manvel (Texas) HS
He went through the testing and was able to walk away with the NFTC DB MVP award. Quite an accomplishment for an underclassman. He has a nice blend of physicality to go with his coverage skills.

CB Kris Boyd - 2015 - Gilmer (Texas) HS
Boyd really got going as the action heated up. A big corner who has added some weight to his frame since the end of the season. He has the skills to come up and press and then still be able turn and run to hang with receivers.

LB Cameron Townsend - 2015 - Fort Bend (Texas) Ridge Point
Townsend is an impressive specimen. He has the speed and skills at linebacker to lock down wied receivers and quick running backs. He showed leadership in the drill work, solidifying his Scout300 and four-star status.

CB Holton Hill - 2015 - Houston (Texas) Lamar
An interesting prospect because he is built like a safety, but plays like a cornerback. His length does not hurt as he is making the transition in and out of his backpedal. He can lock down the bigger and stronger receivers.

CB Jaylon Lane - 2015 - Nacogdoches (Texas) HS
Like Hill, Boyd and P.J. Mbanasor, Lane is another corner with plus size. He is working on some of the techniques at the position, but its easy to see why schools have been offering. He has great concentration, plays with high effort and closes quickly.

S Kenneth McGruder - 2015 - Alief (Texas) Taylor
A big, physical safety prospect, who definitely passes the eye ball test. Shed his sleeper status a bit showing off a great physique and solid skill set. Look for his offer list to double quick enough.

DE Nikolas Daniels - 2016 - Clear Creek
Definitely had a speed advantage coming off the edge ate defensive end in this setting. He was named the DL MVP, and secured that distinction by blowing past The Opening invite Jerry Tillery a couple of times at the end of the one-on-one sessions.
