Powell pulls the trigger

Upland (Calif.) defensive back Kameron Powell told us at the Passing Down 7v7 Tournament two weeks ago that he was giving a lot of thought to committing to Washington State. The talented safety did just that on Tuesday.

Kameron Powell is one of the top safety prospects in the West region. He's easily among the most physical and plays with an edge. Powell loves to hit but is an above average cover safety too and offers a lot of versatility.

On the recruiting front, Washington State has been leading for Powell for some time and the athlete pulled the trigger earlier today.

"There was no need to wait any longer when I knew that's where I wanted to be," Powell said. "I have a great connection with the coaches there and no school recruited me as hard as they did.

"Ken Wilson was my main recruiter and I like him a lot and I'm very excited about the opportunity to play for Coach Leach as well. I like their defense and think I'll fit in really well. I think there's a chance I can come in and make an immediate impact and that's what I'm looking forward to doing."

Powell has yet to visit Pullman but plans to do so shortly.

"I'm going to visit this summer with some other guys," Powell said. "I heard it's a cool college town so I'm looking forward to checking out the place and learning more about it. My quarterback at Upland, Tyler Hilinski, is committed there too and I'm definitely looking forward to playing with him in college.

"I might still do some other trips but I'm solid in my commitment. I'm excited and relieved at the same time. To know where I'll be the next four years of my life feels great and it's definitely a weight off my back."
