"I was sitting in Coach Hoke's office, my dad, my mom and I. He told me the great things [offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier] said about my throwing session. He told me they were offering and I didn't wait too long telling him I wanted to commit."
Malzone, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound gunslinger, had to earn his offer from the Wolverines this Spring, hosting Nussmeier for a workout at his school recently. Following that session, he had to wait as Nussmeier traveled the country watching other prospective quarterbacks.
Upon receiving today's offer, it was the relationship the two have built that made it an easy choice for Malzone.
"It's such a great place up there. I could tell that by my visit today and I've started to build a great relationship with Coach Nussmeier and he's had great success everywhere he has been especially with quarterbacks too. He saw me throw two weeks ago and we talked every single day besides two or three days since then and started to build a great relationship. He has just as much confidence in me to get the job done and I'm fired up about that."
Malzone's family are season ticket holders at Michigan and he has been watching games in the Big House since he was four years old. Now he is ready to create moments that will live in Michigan lore, just like the ones he has witnessed first hand.
"I think about all the great experiences I had there. I've been to all the games. I was at the triple overtime game with Braylon, the last second game with Mario Manningham against Penn State and both night games. The atmosphere at the Big House presents itself with is pretty much indescribable. 115,000 people yelling is pretty special."
Patience was key for Malzone. Even after completing nearly 70% of his passes and leading Brother Rice to an undefeated record and state title, the offers did not pour in the way many expected them to given his talent level. But all's well that ends well as they say, and he is happy to be essentially finished with recruiting and to have a home he is very familiar with.
"It feels great. It's a great opportunity for me and know I'm definitely going to talk to some players. I'm already in a group chat with the committed guys and messaging with Chris Clark, the tight end, so I'm looking to do great things."
