Darrin Kirkland committed to Michigan today after spending yesterday and this morning in Ann Arbor. A four-star prospect with offers from around the country, he took a lot of visits, saw a lot of schools and decided this was the best place for him.
"They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like part of the family," the 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker said. "They accepted me as part of their own and I know this is the right school for me and it feels great."
Kirkland gives the Wolverines a true middle linebacker recruit in their class.
"They said I'll play the same position as Jake Ryan, a MIKE, but they might see me at WILL in blitzing situations but I'll settle in as the leader and the MIKE."
His next step is to help fill out the class and one of his top targets is fellow Indianapolis area linebacker Asmar Bilal.
"The coaches told me there is one spot left for an outside linebacker and he would be a great fit so it would be great to have him join the class."
For now though, Kirkland will enjoy the day and enjoy knowing his future is in Ann Arbor and the Big House.
"I'm extremely excited. It was last year right around this time that I received my first offer from Akron and today I'm committed. I've been fortunate to receive the offers that I have and I'm sure when I take the field for Michigan for the first time, it will be extremely emotional."
