Ask any of the coaches or players at Cass Tech and they will tell you it was only a matter of time before Donovan Peoples-Jones began receiving major scholarship offers.
A 6-foot-2, 170-pound freshman with exceptional athleticism, he was injured for much of last season, but the impact he made once he returned and the natural gifts he displayed for the injury have earned him the nickname "Freak." Still, the lack of film on him lead many to believe the offers may not come until camp season.
That proved to be false last Friday when Ohio State came in and extended an offer.
"It was Coach Kerry Coombs who told Coach Wilcher they offered me," Peoples-Jones says. "It was just real special. I thought they would offer me later in the summer after I attended camp but it came Friday morning."
He added, "Friday was the best day of my life."
Peoples-Jones' father, a doctor, attend school with the Buckeyes' hated rival Michigan, and growing up in "the state up north," he admits he was indoctrinated into the rivalry, but after visiting Columbus recently, he saw the school in a new light.
"We went down there about a month and a half to two months ago. They're recruiting some of our guys and Damon Webb was there, so we toured the facilities and watched practice. I sat in on a receiver meeting to get a better feel. I was excited about everything I saw. Living in Michigan, you learn to kind of dislike Ohio State but they actually impressed me. I saw good things down there."
Getting back to Columbus is one of the freshman phenom's potential June stops.
"I'm not sure about all of them, but Ohio State is a possibility and I know for a fact I'm going to Florida to camp at their Friday Night Lights camp, but anything else, I'm still unsure."
Despite his Wolverine ties, Peoples-Jones' father was still happy for the opportunity his son earned.
"He was excited. A first offer is a first offer and he can't be mad about that. He's going to support me wherever I go and trust me and believe in me."
Of course, the Wolverines have been in contact as well.
"Michigan actually came in [Monday]."
