It started this spring for Jerome Johnson. The 6-foot-4, 301 pound versatile lineman out of Bassfield, Miss. is on the radar of many college programs.
Two have already offered him a scholarship.
"Ole Miss offered me first and it felt good. They came by the school this spring, then I found out about the offer - I was surprised.
"Right after Ole Miss, the next week, Louisville offered me. I was surprised by that one too. Both offers came without me expecting them."
Johnson has yet to visit Ole Miss, but he plans to this summer. He does not know too much about the Rebels or the Cardinals yet. He is new to the recruiting process, so he is starting out slow.
"I do not have any favorites or anything like that. I actually grew up liking UCLA because of what I saw them do on TV. I haven't been on any visits as a recruit yet, I do not know too many coaches yet, and I just want to get out and see some places."
"It feels great to be getting offers early. I have a great opportunity and I want to make the most of it. I will just keep working hard."
Of course schools like Johnson's size, but there is more to like than that. He could project as a defensive tackle or an offensive guard on the next level.
He has his preference.
"I like defensive line better, but I can play either. I think my speed off the ball helps me most on defense. I don't take too many extra steps and I think I move pretty well."
This summer he will continue to get after it as he and his teammates prepare for another state title run at Bassfield. The coaching and the talent around him there help him on multiple levels.
"It helps a lot to be here at Bassfield," said Johnson. "It helps me get better as a player, it helps to get known in recruiting being as a program like this one, and the coaching is great too."
