Scouting Byron Cowart

Byron Cowart is a 5-Star defensive end prospect from Florida. Scout takes a look at him in action.

5-Star defensive lineman Byron Cowart (6'3/255) of Seffner, Fla. already possesses the size and quickness to play virtually any position along the defensive line. He's even athletic enough to play outside linebacker on the college level.

His Armwood team takes advantage of his versatility by moving him all along the line of scrimmage, but he mostly lines up at defensive end, whether they're in a 4-3 or a three down linemen base defense.

Cowart's quickness and burst off the line is other-worldly. He overwhelms offensive tackles before they can get set or get their hands on him. Should an opponent get the jump on him and engage him, Cowart is strong enough to bull rush either tackles or guards.

Cowart has tremendous flexibility, enabling him to dip his shoulder and hips to turn a corner to get to the quarterback or running back in the backfield with incredible quickness. At times he shows off his change of direction with the ball in his hands as he was adept at scooping up fumbles.

The knock on Cowart is that he's not always fully engaged and can sometimes take plays off or coast through series. Obviously that doesn't show up on a highlight video that shows Cowart at his best.

When Cowart is at his best, he's as good as any defensive line prospect in the country.
