Profile: Carson Lydon
Location: Tarpon Spring (Fla.) East Lake
What to like: There is a lot to like about Lydon. The first thing this kid brings is intensity, passion and a motor that never, ever stops. He plays at a break neck speed and flies around the football field. At the Orlando Nike Football Training Camp in March, coaches had to continually tell him to tone down his play. He was actually tackling running backs in the one on one drills. Lydon is the Florida high school version of Clay Matthews. He plays fast and furious and with no limits.
Lydon has good size and is a strong. I wouldn't describe him as speedy but he's fast enough. I really like the way he can diagnosis a play and then attack the ball. He has good football speed getting from point A to point B.
Lydon is physical and very aggressive. He does a nice job of fighting off blocks and then locating the ball. At times he can be a punishing tackler. He plays with good fundamentals in all facets of the game.
Lydon also has some versatility to his game, as he can stuff the run, rush the quarterback and does a nice job in coverage. He can play downhill and stuff the run. Lydon can chase plays down the line and play sideline to sideline. He can also come off the edge and attack the quarterback. Lydon also does a nice job in coverage and shows pretty good extinct when playing the pass.
What may be of concern: I have concerns but nothing pressing. He doesn't have that much length to his frame. While he can bulk up I am not sure how much. I believe he will be perfectly fine in Blacksburg. He can play a little helter skelter and that aggressiveness could get in him some trouble. But that's who he is and part of what makes him the player that he is.
Overall analysis: Lydon seems like the ideal outside linebacker for the Hokies defense. He's looks like an ideal fit for their defense and I believe they are going to love him at Virginia Tech. This is a tough, hard-nosed, old-school ‘backer that really gets after it. Lydon plays with a high degree of intensity and passion and I think he will have an great chance of being a very productive player in Blacksburg, both on defense and as a special teams player.
