Michigan State has enjoyed great success with players from Southwest Ohio and one 2016 prospect…
Gilliam Talks First Two Offers & More
One player many teams are watching in the 2016 recruiting class is Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne defensive back Tobias Gilliam. Saturday, Gilliam saw his hard work pay off with his first two scholarship offers. "I went to the Toledo camp at Wayne a few weeks ago and they were at Ohio State today," said Gilliam. "They said they liked me at the camp a few weeks ago and they were watching me today. So during our lunch break, I talked with them and they said they wanted me to come up for their game against Missouri. "So I thought maybe they would offer me then. But they watched a few drills in the second half of camp and told me I had an offer." If Gilliam was happy about his first scholarship offer, a few minutes later he was even more excited receiving his second offer from Bowling Green. "Coach (Mike) Mickens came up to me about five minutes later and said their defensive coordinator was watching me. So I went extra hard in the next couple of drills and then Coach Mickens said they'd seen enough and that I had an offer from Bowling Green." Being offered by the Falcons defensive backs coach was special for Gilliam. "It was an honor to be offered by Coach Mickens as he was a great player at Wayne," he said. "Coach Mickens said he'd seen me at the Cincinnati camp and that I did well there too. I've never visited their campus but I'll be visiting there soon." Having camped earlier with Michigan State and Michigan, Gilliam is hopeful his early work will result in his first big school offer. "At Michigan State, I worked out in front of Coach (Mark) Dantonio and Coach (Harlon) Barnett the whole time," he said. "They said they'll be watching my film and that they'll be working on the 2015 class first, but I'm at the top of their board in 2016. "Michigan was fun and I did well there too. They said they have to watch the film and that I need to call them next week." Both teams could hold advantages with Gilliam as he's got a few friends going to or headed to each program in the coming years. "I know Vayante Copeland and R.J. Williamson at Michigan State and they are always talking about me going there," explained Gilliam. "I'm teammates with Tyree Kinnel and he is like a big brother to me. Also, Messiah deWeaver just committed to them and I've known him forever. So they could be big influences on me." Gilliam is hoping to attend a few more camps before he puts all his attention on his junior season. "I'm planning to go to Penn State, Alabama and back to Ohio State for their Friday Night Lights Camp," he said.
