"It is a great feeling and definitely gives me confidence," he said. "In the short amount of time I was with the coaches that day, I felt they were very welcoming."
Vollbrecht and his family were able to really take in the campus thanks to his area recruiter.
"Coach Seamonson gave my mother and I a great tour of the campus before camp began. The facilities were all very nice. I really liked the approach of the coaching staff and how they really bought in to the team being more of a family."
Also a standout on the basketball court, hoops takes up some of Vollbrecht's time during the summer, making additional camping tough at the moment.
"I won't have any other camps this summer but next summer I will hopefully be attending more. I am gonna try to go to a few of the U of I games this season and maybe attend and watch a practice."
The Illini have struck first, but as more schools find out about his size and athleticism, they may not find themselves alone on his offer list for long.
