4-star CB Reid Sticking To Plan
Philadelphia St. Joseph's four-star cornerback John Reid knows classes are filling up and schools could begin pressuring him for a decision, but he doesn't want to alter his plan. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Reid, who began receiving scholarship offers prior to his freshman season, made recent visits to Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Penn State, and is planning a July visit to Miami, but it doesn't mean a decision is coming soon. "I've been sticking to a certain plan," Reid said. "I tell coaches the same plan. I haven't switched anything, and I really, really want to take my visits. That's going to be the biggest deciding factor for me." When that times comes, though, Reid will have a catalog of information to sort through. His latest trip was a return to Penn State for a recruiting barbecue, and he was able to spend a lot of time with defensive coordinator Bob Shoop. "I went up there just to get back up there, not for any particular reason," Reid said. "I got to sit down with coach Shoop in the film room, going over the coverages they run. I got to watch a lot of film, even some NFL film, so that was pretty much what we did. "I was down at the barbecue for not too long, and I asked him if we could go upstairs and watch film. He loves that stuff, so there was a good connection." The midwest trip allowed Reid to see several programs up close, which he had not done. "Michigan State kind of reminds me of Penn State a lot from a campus (standpoint) with how big it is and things like that," he said. "I have a really good connection with (secondary) coach (Harlon) Barnett. He's a really good guy, and a guy I could see myself being coached by. It's a great staff, and (assistant) coach (Pat) Narduzzi is a great defensive coordinator and a very, very smart guy." The trip to Notre Dame was the first for Reid. "It's great," he said. "I got to sit down and talk football with (defensive coordinator) coach (Brian) VanGorder. I got to be in their film room, which is a great experience. He's coming from the NFL, so he puts a lot of emphasis on his cornerbacks in his defense, which is great to know. "In the process of them putting great emphasis on the cornerbacks, you know you'll be getting coached hard. He's going to be hard on me with the little things, and for me and my game, that's the thing ‘m looking for from a coach." The tour of the campus also stood out to Reid. "It was nice. As soon as you walk on campus, you see the big golden dome," he said. "You can't help but be in awe of the campus." The campus also stood out at Michigan. "It's a really big campus. The campus is nice," Reid said. "That was a good experience. I got to sit down and talk with their staff. Once again, talking watching film with them was great. I enjoy it. It helps me expand my game so much." Finally, Reid said he wants to visit Miami because of its strong academic prowess, and the balance of a strong football program. "I'm really, really excited for Miami," he said. "It's a really good academic school. It's the Harvard of the south. That's what people say. That's my first time going to the campus, so I'm excited to be going down there." Although Reid likes to see the campuses and interact with current players in various programs, breaking down film with coaches is an important aspect of his decision. "The thing I got the most out of recruiting is I got to meet a lot of knowledgeable guys," he said. "The way I am, I like to learn a lot of things. One day I'd like to make a living out of this, so I am trying to learn as much as I can. Learning and meeting coaches and asking questions, they've been around the game a lot longer than I have, so I can learn a lot of things from them and make a connection. "For me, I'm always in the film room. I don't do a lot of camps, but I still try to do everything I can to get better and expand my knowledge. I'd like to coach one day also, so learning as much as I can about defense and my position gives me an advantage on a lot of guys my age do not do."
