Gaines updates recruitment

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Houshun Gaines is getting closer to narrowning his list of schools. Last weekend, Scout.com caught up with the Rocky Mount (N.C.) defensive end at the Shrine Bowl 100 invite-only camp.

"Right now, I have offers from Boston College, Duke, Florida, Miami, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest," said Houshun Gaines. "I think Vanderbilt could be close to offering, too.

"Florida, Miami, Virginia Tech and NC State are recruiting me the hardest."

Originally, he had some visits scheduled for earlier this month.

"I haven't taken my visits to Florida and Miami yet," said the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Gaines. "I'm actually going down to Florida on July 25 and I'll probably visit Miami while I'm there. Other than those visits, I don't have anything planned."

When will he trim his list of schools?

"If I don't narrow it down Aug. 1, then it will probably be sometime around then," he said. "It will definitely be soon, though.

"I'll probably cut it to five or six. I know Florida, Miami and Virginia Tech will make the list. They're all recruiting me hard, they're best programs and I have the best relationships with those coaching staffs. I definitely get a good vibe from all those schools."

He is unsure about when he will make his decision.

"I don't have a set date right now," Gaines said. "Whenever I get that good feeling, I'll go ahead and pull the trigger."

Update: Gaines announced a top four – in no particular order – Florida, Miami, NC State and Virginia Tech on Sunday night.
