A decision is coming soon for Bethlehem, Pa., Catholic receiver Freddie Simmons, who released his top five Saturday night.
Wake Forest, Rutgers, Virginia, California, and San Diego State are the five programs the senior pass catcher narrowed his list of 11 offers to. Simmons plans to visit Virginia July 21 and decide shortly afterward, saying he wants to have a decision made before his senior season kicks off.
"I didn't want to make a timeline or have a deadline; I wanted to do it on National Signing Day," Simmons said. "But, I've been going on visits and getting to know what recruiting is about.
"I talked to my parents a little bit and narrowed it down to five. I didn't get to visit all of them yet, but I talked to my coach and wanted to narrow it down."
Simmons said his list is not ordered, yet the Demon Deacons and Scarlet Knights are standing out the most. The senior said all five schools had specific reasons for making his list, ranging from academics to relationships and football performance.
Wake Forest: Ever since the recruiting process started, Wake Forest has been there. Since I visited, it opened my eyes to how great of a school it was. The coaches were amazing, and [assistant head] Coach [Kevin] Higgins, probably from a wide receiver's coach standpoint, has been one of the closest coaches I've been in contact with. Me and Coach Higgins have a really good relationship, and he's really a good coach. They're attracting to me because [head] Coach [Dave] Clawson coached two programs from losing records to winning records, and they presented the idea that they want to turn the program around. They don't have many big play making receivers right now and I'm looking for early playing time and an opportunity. They've been there since day one saying that. They legit told me that if I came and work hard, I could start. For any athlete to hear that, it's a big deal.
Rutgers: Rutgers is one of the first schools I visited, and with Rutgers, [Rutgers receiver's] Coach [Ben] McDaniels is there. I wasn't sure how he was, but ever since I met him, he's been keeping in real good and close touch with me. Coach McDaniels, even on my visit, was down to earth and a real cool guy. He never left my side, and made me feel wanted like Wake did. That's why Rutgers and Wake are my top; they've been there telling me they want me. It's a big deal because it's my position coach. Sometimes the defensive coordinator recruits you cause they have that area, but Coach McDaniels has been real good on reaching out and talking to me about the program and everything, and telling me about the opportunities.
Virginia: To be honest, I really don't know much about UVa but I talked to the coaches a lot. I haven't talked to them as much as Wake and Rutgers, but they stress to me their interested. To be honest, it sounds crazy, but I'm interested in Virginia because its different in the fact that no one from the area, the Lehigh Valley, has gone to Virginia and it's a big name school everyone knows about. That's why I'm going to visit, and they are in my top five because I always liked Virginia and known about Virginia. I've always seen them as a big school and I always wanted to play for a big school. [Offensive line] Coach [Steve] Wachenheim, we've been in really close contact, and it's the same thing with Wake and Rutgers, just not as much interest. I'm excited to visit.
California: Their offer was kind of early in my process but they produce a lot of wide receivers that go to the NFL. The coaches are real good and they throw the ball a lot, so that's a big deal and my main reason [for having them in the top five]. I don't know much about Cal, but they're the number one public school in the nation, so you can say that's why they made it academically. They're good but I haven't been in contact as much with the coaches. They saw what they like, I guess and I feel like I could fit their scheme.
San Diego State: San Diego State basically talked about the same opportunities as Rutgers and Wake. They told me they don't have too many big play making wide receivers, and their [pass/run ratio] is 50/50 because they don't really have a wide receiver there that they can rely on like that. I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of going to school on the west coast; that's main reason why San Diego Sate is on there. It's in California, and I always wanted to go to school in California, but that's not all it will come down to. I've been talking to their coach since two months before the end of school, and they've been staying in touch. I looked up videos and seen their campus. It's not really that big of a school for football, but it's a small enough to be, like, a big fish in a pond.
