Five things I saw in Oregon at The Opening last week out of the South region.
It is not if, but when will Calvin Ridley add his fifth star after seeing him workout at wide receiver at The Opening. He was so smooth and he ended up being the MVP of the event for Student Sports. Ridley is currently the No. 59 overall prospect now -- he should be in the top 15 later this week. He is currently committed to Alabama, but plans to check out Florida State soon.
Martez Ivey and Mitch Hyatt are two of the best. Ivey had the better week overall at offensive tackle and his upside is as high as anyone. Hyatt showed well too. Ivey entered The Opening as the No. 1 overall prospect and he did not nothing to hurt hi stock with Scout. Hyatt may move down slightly, but that is still being discussed. He has gained 20 pounds since competing at the Atlanta NFTC this spring and he has a chance to be a first round NFL draft pick like Ivey. Hyatt is committed to Clemson and Ivey likes Auburn and Florida among others.
Ridley was not the only Florida athlete to make a splash at The Opening as a wide receiver. Deon Cain did the same. Cain showed a great burst off the line and he was creating separation consistently against some of the top cover corners in the country. He looks so natural at the receiver position even though he plays quarterback at Tampa Tech. The Clemson commit will move into the Scout 100.
Scout 300 athlete Donte Jackson put on a show on both sides of the ball. He was strong at corner and the nickel position on defense and he made plays on offense at wide receiver too. He was one of the quickest prospects out there and he was tough to get away from. He was one of the hottest prospects in the country this spring and he showed why. Georgia and LSU are the favorites.
Byron Cowart did not disappoint. The five-star defensive end shows speed, as expected, but he also showed power when asked to work inside. His speed off the ball was his biggest weapon regardless of where he lined up, but he showed power and active hands as well. When he was taking a rep, he was asking questions, trying to get better, and that was impressive in its own right. Florida is looked at as the leader with Alabama, Oregon, and USC among others in the race.
