Texas 7v7: Top Skill

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Scout Midlands reporters break down their top skill players from the State 7v7...

Greg Powers' Pick - Dee Anderson
My selection is going to be an underclassman in West Mesquite receiver Dee Anderson. Love what he is bringing to the table on the outside edge of an offense. He is big and competitive, fighting for balls in the air and out-muscling defensive backs to pull them down. He is poised for a huger junior year after sitting behind seniors and other upperclassmen as a sophomore. He will be one of the best in the DFW regardless of class.

Annabel Stephan's Pick - Tyreik Gray
My vote goes to Houston (Texas) Lamar running back Tyreik Gray. Lamar played a variety of quarterbacks in this weekend's tournament, including two sophomores-to-be, and while the team struggled in passing, Gray was the best part of the offense, helping his team drive down the field to score, while leading them through a few rounds of the Consolation Bracket on Saturday. With a number of big offers already in his pocket, I expect Gray to have a big senior season.

Ahmard Vital's Pick - Gary Haynes
Lots of great options here, but we'll go with Manvel receiver Gary Haynes for this one. Like he has done all of last season and this off season, Haynes is just a pain to deal with for a defensive back. He comes out of breaks quickly and before you know it, he's well into the route, which is far too late to react and make a play on the ball.

Gabe Brooks' Pick - Dee Anderson
Picking this is extremely difficult given (1) the overwhelming number of talented receivers who competed this past weekend and (2) 7v7 being a receiver's game. With that said, three guys really impressed me: West Mesquite 2016 receiver Dee Anderson, Manvel 2016 receiver Reggie Hemphill, and Cedar Hill 2015 receiver D'Aundrey Bradley. If I had to pick one, I would probably go with Anderson, who doesn't exactly have a dearth of playmaking teammates, but may not have quite the supporting cast of the other two. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound Anderson emerged this weekend as one of the state's top-tier outside receiver prospects.
