Schools in the Southeastern Conference like junior tight end Jamal Pettigrew.
The Rebels caught him by surprise.
"I talked to Coach [Maurice] Harris (Tight ends) and Coach [Grant] Heard (Wide receivers) on the phone and they told me about the offer," said Pettigrew. "They told me they liked my style of play and how I can play different positions."
Pettigrew has not visited Oxford, Miss. before, so he does not know a lot about the Ole Miss program yet. He plans to learn more now though with an offer.
The offer from Florida was a big one. The coach that offered him from UF played at New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine like Pettigrew does and the junior tight end grew up watching the Gators.
"Coach [Derek] Lewis (Tight ends) played at my high school, so there is that connection. That is cool, but I also liked Florida growing up. I watched Florida a lot and I like their program. I was a Tim Tebow fan and I actually camped at Florida last summer."
While the 6-foot-5, 216 pound four-star tight end admits to liking the Gators as a kid, the school he liked most is in his home state. It was LSU.
Like many top prospects in Louisiana, Pettigrew knows a lot about the Tigers.
"LSU is a top school and they have a top football program," said Pettigrew. "When I got the offer at camp, it was very surprising. I think I did really well at the camp, but I did not think an offer was coming.
"I got to talk with Les Miles for about 30 minutes in his office and we talked football, his personal life, and it was great.
"LSU brought in some great recruits in 2014, they have a great class going in 2015, and they are on some top guys in 2016 too. I love how LSU is close to home and I am comfortable there."
For now, LSU is not the top school for Pettigrew. He does not have a leader yet, but may have a decision by the end of 2014.
"I could commit during my junior season or I will have my mind made up by next spring."
"I will probably start making a list of favorites pretty soon. I have been focused on the team, so I have not thought too much about recruiting this summer."
He will add more offers and he will give schools a look, but as he trims his list down, he will see if the school has what he is looking for.
"First, I am looking for a top degree, so I want to see if they are strong in what I am looking for," said Pettigrew. "I am also going to consider the proximity to home so my parents and grandparents can see me. I am going to see what type of offense the school runs also. I am a tight end, but I would like to be able to flex out on the next level."
Pettigrew does not plan to extend his recruitment any further than he needs to. He wants to get his decision out of the way as soon as he is ready to commit.
