Thursday night kicks off the 2014 Texas high school football season for teams looking to get a one-day head start on the festivities.
Scout.com analysts will be all over the state at games, including Irving MacArthur at Garland, which starts at 7 p.m. at Williams Stadium in Garland.
Here's a look at some players we'll keep an eye on during Thursday night's contest:
Luther Kirk, 2015 S, Garland: according to Garland head coach Jeff Jordan, Kirk (picture above) does not have any offers yet, but he's sure that will change. Kirk was forced to play quarterback a year ago because of a spring injury to the Owls' starter, so recruiters didn't get to see Kirk play as much of his natural position of safety as they would have liked. On top of that, Kirk missed spring ball this year with an ankle injury, but he's healthy for tomorrow night's opener. Jordan said the 6-foot, 180-pound Kirk, who will play both ways this fall, has good speed and athleticism, as well as long arms. He threw for 702 yards and ran for 801 yards as a junior.
Donovan Ransom, 2015 DT, Garland: Ransom is committed to Arkansas State. He pledged to the Red Wolves in June. At 6-foot-1, 270 pounds, Ransom plays an even-front 3-technique defensive tackle role for Garland. That's also where he's expected to play in college. Garland also uses Ransom as a tight end because, as Jordan says, he's athletic for his size and frame. Ransom had 25 tackles and four sacks in 2013.
T.J. King, 2015 DE, Irving MacArthur: the 6-foot-4, 225-pound King committed July 20 to Louisiana Tech, picking the Bulldogs over another offer from UTSA. King had 50 tackles as a junior. He's a long, tall prospect who has a good frame to add positive weight once he's playing at the next level.
