Georgia Backer Headed to Minnesota
The Golden Gophers are having another super year on the recruiting trail and one of the top prospects that will sign with Minnesota in February is Georgia linebacker Leland Jones. Jones, a 6-foot-2, 212-pounder from Atlanta (Douglass) chose Minnesota over Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina and others. Quite a get for Glen Mason and his staff. Why did Jones give Minnesota his verbal commitment? "I wanted something different," said Jones. "I didn't want to go to a school where the campus was the entire town. "I'm from the city and I wanted more of a city atmosphere. I'm getting that in Minneapolis. "Clemson came in second. I liked Clemson but I wanted to get away from home and try something different. "When I visited Minnesota, everything just clicked. I liked the school, the city, the players and the coaches. I knew I could see myself at Minnesota the next four or five years." Jones is a three-year varsity starter. In 2003, Leland had 146 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and forced five fumbles. He was the city of Atlanta's defensive player of the year.
