Jamar Jackson, a cornerback from Hampton (Va.) Bethel, is working this summer to get better for the fall. Not an unusual occurrence, but he is getting a little help along the way.

“Things are picking up,” says the 5-foot-9, 190 pounder. “I like Virginia Tech, Virginia, Maryland; I would say Notre Dame, Kent State, NC State, and Wake Forest are also up there.”

Of those schools, Jackson says Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Maryland have offered, but he would like to take his time and wait until the end of the fall to make a commitment. He will use this summer to work with the college coaches at each of the three schools.

“I’m leaving this Sunday to go to the Maryland camp. Then I am going to the Virginia camp, and then in July the Virginia Tech camp. We are also having our team camp at James Madison.

The focus of Jackson this off-season is improvement. He did not perform well in his own mind at recent combines and, due to that, he is looking to get help in improving.

“I have been working with a personal trainer for about a month. I can see improvement already in my speed and my strength and my awareness. I have added fifteen pounds to my bench, my 40 time went down to about a 4.4 from a 4.5.”

Jackson says his goal this season is to win the state championship while earning first-team all-district honors. With his tenacity on the field, that certainly could happen.

“My strengths are my aggressiveness and awareness to find the ball while it’s in the air.”
