“We’re excited about our sponsorship of such a worthwhile award,” said Deborah Sabo, director of marketing for Ball Park. “This honor rewards the core principles within high school football that we have here at Ball Park – excellence and quality.”
Players were nominated from across the country by their coaches for this prestigious award. From those nominations, 14 official nominees have been selected by the selection committee of Scout.com and Tom Lemming. Former recipients of the award include: Heisman front-runner Adrian Peterson, running back (Oklahoma), 2004 winner; Chris Leak, quarterback (University of Florida), 2003 winner; Lorenzo Booker, running back (Florida State), 2002 winner and Kevin Jones, running back (Virginia Tech, recently drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round).
From here, the group of 14 will be narrowed down by the selection committee of Scout.com, Tom Lemming and members of the National High School Writers Association. Five finalists will be announced in mid-December. The winner will then be announced at the U.S. Army All-American Awards Dinner during bowl week.
“We are excited to have Ball Park as a national sponsor for the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl,” said Richard McGuinness, president of SportsLink, Inc. “The Ball Park High School Player of the Year award is the equivalent of the college Heisman.”
The winner of the Ball Park National High School Player of the Year Award will receive the Ken “The Sugar Land Express” Hall Trophy. Hall is widely thought of as the greatest high school football player of all time and was recently recognized by ESPN.com as the fifth best high school athlete of all time.
The Ball Park National High School Player of the Year will be announced at the US Army All-American Bowl Awards Dinner to be held on January 14, 2005. The awards dinner will be held on the eve of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on NBC. Recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Barry Sanders, the electrifying running back for the Detroit Lions, 2-time NFL Player of the Year and Heisman Trophy winner as a junior at Oklahoma State, will be a featured speaker.
