Shawn Doman to BYU
Northwest Recruiting Analyst
Posted Dec 21, 2004
Shawn Doman is a 6-foot, 200-pound athlete from Canby, Oregon, and if the last name conjures up some pigskin memories for BYU fans, it should. Shawn will be the fifth Doman to play football for Brigham Young University. Brandon, a cousin of Shawn's, is arguably the most well-known of the Domans to play for the Cougars, but Shawn hopes to change that.
Doman made the decision this past Saturday, in order to move on and get prepared for his mission that he'll take after enrolling at
for a year. "BYU has contacted me a couple of times and I think that's where I'm going to head off to," he told Scout.com Tuesday. "I haven't taken an official visit there, but I've been there a lot of times. I went there for camp a couple of years ago.
"I'm going to play for a year and then take my mission."
The Cougar coaches like Doman as an athlete. "They said that they didn't care (about position)," Shawn said. "They told me I could start out wherever I wanted to and if it didn't work out they would put me where they thought I could play.
"They said I was a smooth runner and a good tackler. They said that was what they were looking for."
Doman played halfback and safety for Canby, racking up 61 tackles on defense and close to 600 yards and eight touchdowns on offense. Now that football is over, he wrestles at the 189-pound class. "Football is my main sport, but I like to wrestle because it helps keep me sharp and competitive," he said. "I think it helps me be a better football player."
had offered at the time of Doman's commitment, but had backed down a little bit.
