There were nearly 600 prospects at the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio last month. One prospect that stood out in my eyes was Michigan signal caller Mike Canfield. The 6-foot-1, 216-pounder, from Lansing (Everett) showed a very strong arm and he’ll be a Midwest quarterback to keep an eye on in 2005. Canfield is making his junior day rounds.

“I’ll be at Michigan this weekend for a junior day,” Mike Canfield said. “I’ll be at Purdue next weekend. I don’t have any offers yet.

“Both Michigan and Michigan State are sending me hand-written letters. My early favorites are Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

“I’m completely open. I’ll look at any school that wants to offer me a scholarship. I’m going to make a lot of unofficial visits this summer.”

Canfield has started his entire high school career at quarterback. As a freshman, he played at Lansing (Eastern) and transferred to Everett as a sophomore. He started at quarterback for Everett as both a sophomore and as a junior.

In 2004, Canfield threw for 2,100 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed for 500 yards. Canfield was named honorable mention all-state.

Canfield told Scout.com what makes him a D-1 quarterback recruit.

“I have great arm strength,” Canfield said. “I can also make things happen with my legs if the pocket breaks down. I consider myself a dual-threat quarterback.”

Canfield carries a 3.0 GPA in the classroom.
