Getting Complicated

Missouri defensive end Jerry Brown has coaching, dormatories, academic support and defensive substitution patterns on his mind as he tries to separate his top two choices. The 6-foot-5, 260 pounder from Vashon High School in St. Louis already has offers from all his favorites.

St. Louis (Mo.) defensive end Jerry Brown (6-5, 260, 4.8) now says Nebraska leads slightly over Oklahoma, Illinois, Missouri and Louisville. All have offered as well as Michigan State.

"Nebraska and Oklahoma are my #1 and #2 teams right now," said Brown, from Vashon High School.

"With Nebraska, for me, I really like coach (John) Blake (defensive line). He reminds me so much of my head coach Reginald Ferguson. I really want to play for someone like that when I get to college. He has a real good relationship that he establishes with his players, and he really wants you to graduate, get your degree and be the best that you can both on and off the field.

"I think if I were to go to Nebraska and win a national championship, it would mean more than if I went to Oklahoma and won one," said Brown. "That's because Nebraska is a building program and I'd like to be a part of what they're doing over there. I like the campus there because it seems like a real public place. People always seem to pass through there, and hold conferences thereā€¦people from all over the country.

"I also like the dorms over at Nebraska, and even though it's not really a big city, they've got a pretty big city right next to Lincoln. I can't remember the name of it, but I know that it's pretty big and there's a lot to do. I also like how great the coaches are at Nebraska and how they're going to be there for a while. You know if they have a bad season ahead, they're not just going to fire the coaches. Where at Oklahoma, if they had a bad season, the coaches there would be gone."

"From what I understand, Oklahoma has a much better academic support system in place--more than any other college out there. I don't know their graduation rate, but it's probably low because they send so many players to the NFL real early. I had a great time out there when I was at their spring game recently. Their defense looked on point," he said.

"I had a great time seeing the scrimmage game at Oklahoma's spring game. Their defense looked really impressive. But the offense there didn't look too good, and that's probably because they don't have Jason White as QB anymore. They need to tighten up their offense a bit it looked like.

"I can't remember the kinds of plays that the defense was calling out, but they all looked great. Everybody was making their tackles and basically shutting down the entire offense," he said. "Coach (Jackie) Shipp (defensive line) told me something that I didn't like about the program when I was there. He said that he likes to substitute a lot of his players on the defensive line and not let anybody play an entire game. He told me that the reasons for that were because after a while during the game, players either start attacking too much of the offensive line, or they start attacking the ball too much. So he likes to substitute them so that everything ends up evening out on defense after the game.

"I really don't like that idea because I figure that if I'm good enough to play the entire game, then I want to do just that. Plus, it takes an entire game to get all of your stats up to par."

Brown has been to JR Days at Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa, and he was at the Scout.com combine on April 23 in Champaign, Illinois.

"This summer, I'm going to a team camp at Illinois, and I want to take in camps at both Missouri and Kansas State.

"I'd like to take some official visits and make my decision on a program after the season, but it's all going to really depend on how much I really like a school. I'll most likely do it after the season though."
