A Dream Come True

Michigan State has a verbal commitment from one of the “Top Five” in-state prospects. Charlie Gantt, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound, tight end, from Bloomfield Hills (MI) Brother Rice says he had an easy decision to make and it didn’t really matter how many schools offered him a scholarship.
“I’ve always wanted to play for State,”
Charlie Gantt
said. “I love the coaches at
Michigan State
. I committed while I was at their camp last month.
“I feel that Michigan State has an offense that utilizes the tight end quite a bit and I feel that I have a bright future there. This is a dream come true for me.”
Gantt was moved up the varsity as sophomore but didn’t start full-time until his junior season where he was used primarily as a blocking tight end and a defensive lineman.
As a junior, Gantt did catch 9 passes and he scored a couple of touchdowns. He wasn’t showered with a lot of post-season accolades but that didn’t stop several schools from offering Charlie a scholarship.
“
Duke
,
North Carolina
,
Penn State
and a lot of the MAC schools offered me a scholarship.” Gantt said.
“My grandpa, Robert Gantt, was an All-American football player at Duke and he played for the
Chicago Bears
.”
Gantt probably got some of his athleticism from his grandfather. Charlie is also a very good basketball player. Basketball was actually Gantt’s primary sport when he entered Brother Rice but he quickly turned into a football player.
What does the future hold for Gantt? He’s got a very good frame that could carry more weight. I see Gantt getting a little thicker during his first year in East Lansing.
Gantt could grow into a defensive end or tackle but for now he looks to be a very solid tight end prospect for John L. Smith. Charlie’s got a good pair of hands, he’s tough and he can block. Just what the doctor ordered for the Spartans.
