A.J. Wallace is one of the top two-way players from the state of Maryland. Wallace, 6-1 and 195 pounds, stars at running back and cornerback for Pomfret (Md.) McDonough High School.
“Most schools want me to play corner,” said Wallace. “Some schools like me as a wide receiver and running back. For me it doesn’t matter. I just want to play.
”I have great size and I am a shut down corner. I can really play bump and run well.
“As a running back I have speed, quickness and vision.”
So not only will Wallace have to figure out what position to play at the next level but also for who. He is currently listing many big time programs. Nebraska offered him first followed by Maryland, Penn State and then everything snowballed from there.
“It has been overwhelming and that’s how it happened.
”Nebraska has a great fan base and there is such a great opportunity there for me at cornerback. I will visit them officially on October 29th.
”I am scheduled to visit Ohio State (9-9) for an official visit. They have great tradition and put players and cornerbacks in the NFL.
”The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Florida State is Deion (Sanders) and the second thing is Bobby Bowden. FSU is also a winning program.
“Florida has a hot coach (Urban Meyer) and they are gonna ball big time again.
“Miami and Oklahoma seem to always play for championships and they are both fast teams.
“I like coach (Les) Miles at LSU and they lost two corners to the NFL so there is a need there.
“I like the coaching staff at Michigan and they play a lot of cornerbacks during a game. And I think I can get on the field there.”
Speaking of Michigan Wallace camped there this summer. He also took an unofficial visit to Ohio State.
“The Michigan camp was exciting. I wanted to see how the coaches where, the camp was fast paced and it was a good experience.
”I liked my unofficial to Ohio State. I meet Ted Ginn, Jr., talked with Coach (Jim) Tressel and visited their business school.”
On 169 carries as a junior Wallace rushed for 1,367 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also added 12 receptions for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Wallace picked off three passes and deflected 17 others, while also racking up 65 tackles. He also had three punt return scores.
