Safety Supreme

Antwine Perez

"My host at Michigan was (defensive back) Morgan Trent," said New Jersey safety Antwine Perez. "There were so many good things about the trip that I can't pick just one. I arrived on Saturday morning and we went to the game and got a chance to talk with all the players..."

Camden (N.J.) safety Antwine Perez (6-2, 200, 4.5) spent last weekend visiting Michigan for the Notre Dame game with his parents.

"LSU, Michigan and USC have basically made the cut for me," said Perez, from Wilson High School. "I'm officially visiting those schools for sure, and I don't know who else. Maybe someone like Tennessee, but I can't say I have a top five or anything. Those are just the schools that stick out to me right now. I'm still looking around.

"My host at Michigan was (DB) Morgan Trent. There were so many good things about the trip that I can't pick just one. I arrived on Saturday morning and we went to the game and got a chance to talk with all the players.

"They still had their heads up even though they lost," he said. "They were still a focused team. There were a lot of guys on the team who were injured.

"After the game, I just hung out with some of the players and we watched the Ohio State-Texas game. Then I returned home Sunday evening.

"I'm going to USC this weekend (9/16)," Perez said. "I just want to see how it is. I've never been to California before, but USC seems like a good school, academically too. I just want to check it out. They have good things going on there.

"I don't think I'm going to visit LSU on September 24. I will visit them sometime, but the September trip is not set up. I've always loved college football, not just any team, and college football is big in the SEC. LSU also has good coaching and facilities.

"None of these schools are recruiting me harder than the others. And none of them are pressuring me to make a commitment to them. They are all in touch with me and they all tell me just to make my decision when I'm ready. I've never been close to committing to anyone and I don't have any timetable for that.

"I can play either free or strong safety," he said. "I don't have a preference. Both spots are fine with me and I'm playing both positions now. Coaches like me because I can come up and make the big play and cover too. I'd still like to work on my coverage skills. I have 54 total offers.

"We lost our first game to Camden Catholic 42-12. We don't play again until next Thursday (Northern Burlington)."
