Crazy in Eugene

Chris Guarnero

"Oregon looked good, but they are young," said Colorado offensive lineman Chris Guarnero. "They just had to make a couple of more plays early on. Maybe if they could have gone up 23-0, they could have forced USC to pass all the time. Oregon will get better though..."

Denver (Colo.) offensive lineman Chris Guarnero (6-2, 266, 5.5) visited Oregon alone this weekend for the USC game and came away impressed.

"I arrived on Friday and came back on Sunday," said Guarnero, from Mullen High School. "I stayed at the Hilton in Eugene without a room-mate. I had two different hosts: Geoff Schwartz was with me the first night and Jeff Kendall was my host on Saturday. I think Kendall is from Colorado Springs, or somewhere around there.

"The best thing about the trip was just being around the players and seeing how they interact with the students. It's crazy up there. They have great fan support. I had heard about that before I went there and this was definitely the craziest football game I've been to.

"Oregon looked good, but they are young," he said. "They just had to make a couple of more plays early on. Maybe if they could have gone up 23-0, they could have forced USC to pass all the time. Oregon will get better though.

"After the game, we didn't go into the locker room. We did go to their weight room and I spoke with coaches (Steve) Greatwood and (Gary) Crowton. I think there were four other prospects visiting with me: Allen Bradford (LB/SS), Devin Ross (DB), Gabe Miller (LB) and Jamathan Ingram-Lyle (DB).

"Their campus is nice. Everything is really green and pretty close together. The players all have cars, but you'd be able to walk to your classes and tutors.

"Overall, I really liked the coaches and the fan support there," Guarnero said. "Their locker room is pretty new and the facilities are top-notch. I liked Schwartz a lot. All the linemen seemed pretty cool. I would say my visit to Oregon moved them up a little, almost to a tie with California. But If I had to pick between those two schools tonight, I would probably choose California.

"I really like the Cal coaches. Coach (Jeff) Tedford is a great coach and they are a program on-the-rise. I'm set to visit Cal on December 9.

"The other two schools that I'm interested in are Colorado and Miami. Miami just offered me about three weeks ago and I might visit them on December 16, but it's not set yet. I want to check them out because I've never been there and they send a lot of players to the NFL.

"Colorado plays Nebraska on November 25 and I might see them that weekend, but I might have a practice I have to go to instead that weekend. I still like the Buffs and I was committed to them once. They are close by and the Big 12 is a good conference."

Mullen High is 3-1 and plays at home against Aurora Eaglecrest on Friday.
