Dyke, Va., defensive back/safety Greg Davis (6-3, 205, 4.5), aka "Hollywood", claims Nebraska as the new leader, with a small advantage over previous favorite Virginia (both offered).
"It's pretty close between the two, but I would say Nebraska is a slight leader over Virginia right now," said Davis, of Blue Ridge High.
The announcement of a new leader comes after an official visit to Nebraska on Sept. 30, and he reports the experience made an impact.
"Nebraska was my first -- and only -- official visit so far. What a trip! It was crazy -- the fans were unbelievable. They were screaming my name, 'Hollywood,' 'Hollywood!' It surpassed my expectations," he said.
"Coach (Phil) Elmassian, the cornerback coach, had been talking to me and told me I needed to come out and visit. He said once I came to Nebraska that I would like the fans and be blown away. He said the fans were crazy, and he was right.
"The school itself was real good, and they have something like 220 academic All-Americans. So there is a lot of academic support, and to me that's real important," Davis explained.
"I am also interested in Virginia Tech next after Virginia, then North Carolina State and for the fifth spot Maryland, West Virginia and Miami are all tied (all offered). I will take official visits to the rest of my top four, and once I decide on which the fifth school will be, I will take an official to that school. The schools have been throwing around dates with me and I am going to try to finish them up after the season.
"Schools want me to play corner or safety. I can play either. I want to play a little on both sides because that's what I am used to, and there is the possibility for that with these schools," he said.
The Blue Ridge program is currently ranked number two in the state with a 6-1 record. They will host Hampton on Oct. 29, which according to Davis, "is a game that will clinch a playoffs spot for us."
He added, "Our team is focusing on winning the state championships this year. As an individual, I am playing the best I can every game. I know I should be the number one defensive back and I am doing what I can to show that I am the best this year."
Davis reports five interceptions, 40 tackles, five touchdowns, 400 receiving yards, 230 punt return yards and 10-15 big hits.
Davis carries a 3.2 GPA, but needs improvement on test scores with retakes of the ACT and SAT in November.
