Who is the (Class of 2006) National Player of the Year? There are lots of worthy candidates like quarterback Mitch Mustain and Matthew Stafford and running back Chris Wells. Who made the 1st and 2nd Scout.com All-American teams? | |||
|
Running back Chris Wells from Garfield High School in Akron, Ohio, is Scout.com National Player of the Year. Wells beat out quarterbacks Mitch Mustain (Springdale, Ark.), Matthew Stafford (Dallas, Texas), Tim Tebow (St. Augustine, Fla.), wide receiver Percy Harvin (Virginia Beach, Va.), and others for this award. There is much sentiment among Scout.com analysts that Wells, who has committed to play for Ohio State, could have the same impact as Maurice Clarett did as a true freshman a few seasons ago for the Buckeyes. Wells, 6-foot-1, 225 pounds, finished his senior season with 2,134 yards and 27 touchdowns on 223 carries. He also did not have a strong supporting cast. ![]() Chris Wells Wells had several 200-yard plus games this year and capped the season by going for 355 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries against rival Buchtel of Akron, Ohio. “Wells is a big back with good speed,” said Jamie Newberg, National Recruiting Editor at Scout.com. “He has the ability pound it between the tackles and run with authority. Wells has excellent balance, vision and can surprise you with his elusiveness and lateral movement. He just has that rare combination of size, speed, quickness and power that is so hard to find. With that said and the year he had he is not only our top prospect in the country but our Player of the Year.” Last season the Scout.com Player of the Year was quarterback Ryan Perrilloux (LSU). Wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. (Ohio State) and quarterback Chris Leak (Florida) were the two previous winners. Wells is the first winner that also happened to be the Scout.com No. 1 ranked prospect in the nation. “Wells deserves to be our Player of the Year,” said Chris Pool, Scout.com’s Midwest Recruiting Editor. “The 6-1, 225-pounder is a powerful tailback that runs north-south with explosion. Wells has tremendous speed, he can make defenders miss and he’ll be a difference maker in Columbus as a true freshman.” Wells also leads the Scout.com All-American team.
