El Paso Andress defensive tackle Andre Jones is one of the top players in Texas and this Saturday he attended a junior day in Austin. Now he has some big news for the Longhorn staff.
“I committed to Texas this afternoon,” Jones said. “I just wanted to come home and talk it over with my mom. I sat out the reasons why I wanted to go there and she said they were real smart reasons and I made the call the coaches to this afternoon.”
The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Jones has been a dominating force since his freshman year. It's nearly unheard of for a freshman to start for a 5A school in Texas, but Jones has done just that and is the biggest prospect to come out of El Paso in quite some time.
“I talked to coach Brown and coach Tolley,” Jones said. “They were both real excited and told me welcome to the family and told me they hoped I could come by again.”
Notre Dame gave the Horns a run for their money for a while, but the in-state school won out in the end.
“I talked to my mom and she has been thinking about moving to San Marcos so she will be close to me and able to come and see me play,” Jones said. “I like it that it is kind of close to home and the way coach Brown runs things is very family oriented. I don’t want to go far from home when you can have everything in your home state.”
