The state of Ohio usually produces a top prospect at the quarterback position in every recruiting class. The last couple of years have been unusually quiet until late in the process where targets like Rick Stanzi exploded on to the National scene. Could Northmont High’s massive gunslinger be in a similar situation?

Scout.com two-star prospect Clay Belton, a 6-foot-5, 219-pound left-hander from Northmont High in Clayton, Ohio is one of the top quarterbacks in the “Buckeye State”.

Belton joins players like Chris Smith (Marshall Commit) and Skylar Jones (Wake Forest Commit) as signal callers from the state who have garnered looks from some of the most successful collegiate football programs.

This summer Belton participated in a plethora of summer camp sessions, which allowed him to gain even more exposure with powerhouse programs throughout the Midwest.

“I went on the Ted Ginn Sr. Tour,” Belton began. “We toured twelve different universities throughout the Midwest.”

“Throughout the tour I made a big impression. I had my best camps at Miami (OH) and Wisconsin. Miami acknowledged my performance by offering me a full scholarship a couple of weeks ago.”

Miami is not the only school who has taken an interest in Belton’s talents.

“I also have offers from Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Kansas State, Toledo and Duke,” he said. “Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa have also been showing me a lot of interest and I am interested to see where that goes.”

Belton benefits by playing plays in a pass heavy offense and by being tutored by one of the most highly regarded quarterback minds in the “Miami Valley”, Northmont QB coach Mike Schneider.

“The bonus is really how he prepares me,” Belton said of his relationship with the coach. “I feel I am a lot more advanced in some facets of the game. I feel that I am more knowledgeable on the field and I know what reads to make because he has been helped me to understand the coverage.”

Belton, who unfortunately broke the thumb on his throwing hand last weekend in a victory over Miamisburg, would like to come to a final decision sometime towards the middle or end of the season, but he wants to judge the interest from some of the big name schools that have been keeping close contact.

“In the end I am going to make my decision based on the environment of the school, and what the school has to offer me off of the field,” Belton informed. “As of right now there is a lot of interest from the Big Ten, so I am kind of in the waiting stage.”

“I do want to go somewhere that is a will spread it out. It is every football players dream to play in the NFL, so I would like to play in a pro style offense that will get you ready for the next level.”

Belton passed for 2,800 yards as a junior with 30 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions earning All-Ohio and All-League honors.
