“It was a lot of things,” Young said. “I was serious about playing in the Pac 10 and I really like the UC system so it came down to Cal and UCLA. Cal offered me early in the process and was recruiting me really hard. The school itself is literally down the street from my house so I’ve been there several times and I liked the idea of staying close to home.
“UCLA was cool too. I camped there and liked the campus and the coaching staff a lot. It’s a nice area and the team is always pretty strong but they haven’t offered me yet and I kind of got tired of waiting. With Cal, I’ve heard great things about Coach (Jeff) Tedford and the offense he’ll be bringing in. I heard he likes to throw the ball a lot so I felt it was a great all around fit for me.”
Young is a speed receiver and had a strong showing at the NorCal Nike Camp. He clocked a 4.48 in the 40, 4.12 in the shuttle, jumped 32 inches in the vertical and did 15 reps on the bench. He also looked good catching passes and is explosive in and out of his breaks.
“I still want to take my trips but that’s something I probably need to discuss with the Cal coaches,” Young said. “Even though I’m solid with Cal, I’ve always wanted to take my visits and see some other colleges. Now that I’m committed, I don’t know if they’ll still recruit me, but I’m definitely still interested in hearing from them."
