This visit gave his family a chance to view the campus.
"My mom, step dad, little sister, and uncle came with me. They liked everything about Ole Miss. They liked how they are coming along with their football program and the new academic center. They also liked the location and safe environment and just everything about it," added Rishaw Johnson
Johnson had a familiar host for the weekend.
Green-Ellis was my host. We went to high school together. We go way back.
It was nice getting to chill with him. We still talk a lot on the phone, but we
do not get to kick it much anymore.”
The current Ole Miss football team is dotted with Louisiana players and coaches; that looks to be a positive for Rishaw.
“I felt like I fit right in with the players. I like the
environment there. I can adapt to it really well because it has such a Louisiana
flavor at Ole Miss, with there being so many Louisiana players and coaches up
Rishaw thought he knew just about all there was to know about the Rebels until he came on the visit.
“I thought I knew pretty much
everything there was to know about Ole Miss before I came on the trip because
I went up there for a football game (GA), their football camp and Junior Day,
but I learned a lot about Ole Miss during my visit. I got to really learn about
their academics, and I got to meet their strength and conditioning coach. We went
over how everything is run up there. I saw the campus and where the players live.
I learned a lot.”
Coach Orgeron is noted as one of the top recruiters in the country due to his different methods and tireless work. One of Coach "O's" philosophies is to encourage his commitments to visit other colleges. This caught Rishaw by surprise.
“My meeting with Coach Orgeron went good. He told
me to stay solid with my commitment and that he was happy to have me as a Rebel.
He knows I am taking other visits, but he encouraged me to take those visits.
Coach Orgeron told me that they have nothing to hide. He told me and my mother
that he wanted me to see the other places because he knows Ole Miss has more to
offer than they do. That kind of surprised me that he wanted me to visit the other
schools, but it told me how confident he was about his program. I liked that.”
When will Rishaw take some more visits?
“FSU and LSU are trying to get me
to set up a date, but nothing has been set yet. I will probably get something
set up pretty soon.”
Johnson committed to Ole Miss this past summer; does this visit reaffirm his commitment?
“I feel more comfortable about
my commitment now than I did before I came on my visit, but I am still looking
forward to my other visits, so I can compare them to Ole Miss. But I feel solid
with my commitment. I really like Ole Miss a lot.”
What will Rishaw look at while he is on his other visits?
“I will be looking at my relationship
with the coaches while I am on my other visits. I will also look at playing time
and their depth chart. I want to see how well I get along with the players and
see if their players live on campus, and if they do live on campus, what their
living environment is like.”
What did Johnson learn about the coach's relationships at Ole Miss?
“My relationship with the Ole Miss coaches is real good. I am real close with Coach Wilson. And what I liked is how much the players liked the Ole Miss coaches. They say they are real laid back and funny. The players are real close with their coaches.”
