Four-star defensive tackle Devon Still (6-5, 250, 4.9), from Howard High School in Wilmington (Del.), said he now favors Penn State and Ohio State over Michigan. All have offered.
"I visited Ohio State back in September," Still said. "For a while I favored the Buckeyes, but after I returned from Penn State I'd say the two schools are now equal. Coach Jim Tressel came to my house yesterday (Dec. 4). I wasn't home so he met with my mom, then came by my work. I work at Finish Line in the local mall. He pretty much just wanted to let me know how much the program needed me. He said they really needed someone of my size on the team.
"When I visited Ohio State I was really impressed with Coach Tressel. But he won't be my direct coach. I haven't even spoken with the coach that I would be dealing directly with if I did go to Ohio State. I'm impressed with the amount of players that the Buckeyes send to the NFL. They also have a new facility being built; it should almost be done. Ohio State is about nine hours away. Distance is going to be a factor. I'm used to my parents coming to all my games.
"Last weekend (December 1) I visited Penn State," he said. "I met Coach Larry Johnson (defensive line) and I was very impressed with him. He presented himself as a very strong man. He's not only a coach, but also a man teaching boys to become men. Being away from home, I realized that it is important to have a father figure. Someone you can turn to when you need to speak man-to-man. He would also be the coach that I would directly interact with everyday. My parents really liked him as well.
"I got to hang out with the players, watch practice and tour the campus. At first I thought Penn State would be totally country. But the campus is really great. I loved it. There isn't anything country about the campus. It's just placed in the country. If I walk away with a degree from Penn State, I'll be able to write my own ticket. I would be set. I won't always have football.
"At my visit I hung out with Brandon Snow (fullback). He's from Delaware too," Still said. "He made some great points about Penn State. I'll only be three hours away from home and having a degree from Penn State would be a huge success. Being only three hours away, my parents could visit me more often and have an opportunity to watch me play.
"I'm visiting Michigan this weekend. The Wolverines are my least favorite because I just don't feel that I know enough about them. Coach Steve Szabo (linebackers) is visiting my home tomorrow (Dec. 6). I'm sure we'll do an overview of the school and the academic and football programs. He says that if I prove myself I could have an opportunity to play early.
"My mom's side of the family lives 10 minutes away from Michigan," Still said. "If I attended Michigan I would at least have family near by. Otherwise the school is about eleven hours away from my home.
"I'll have to go to all three visits and come home to discuss my options with my parents. At one point my parents favored Ohio State too. Once my parents met Coach Johnson from Penn State, Ohio State was no longer in the lead. I'll have to see how it goes once I visit Michigan.
Final senior stats: 59 tackles/1 forced fumble/13 sacks.
Still reports a 2.9 core GPA and a 920 SAT (old version).
