Baseball or Football for Jones?
Chad Jones had an incredible senior season for Baton Rouge (La.) Southern University Lab School. The 6-3 and 230 ball hawking safety finished with 134 tackles and 12 interceptions (four returned for touchdowns). On offense he played quarterback, running back, wide receiver and tight end and finished with 11 more scores. Now that his senior football season is complete he must decide on his college choice. This weekend he has his first official visit. "I am headed out to USC on Friday," said Jones. "I am pretty excited because I have not been out there yet. I like that coaching staff and I talk with them a lot. They do a great job. I am anxious to see everything." LSU is another team high on the Jones radar. They are after all, the home team. "That they are and I know them better than anyone. My brother plays there and I just feel comfortable there. I also like coach (Bo) Pelini." Two other teams in the Jones sweepstakes are Florida State and Florida. For now, he has an official visit lined up with the Seminoles next month. "I go out and see them on January 13th. With them it's just a situation where I really like their defense and how they play. A couple of coaches have made in-home visits. "I know I will visit Florida for sure but I have not set it up just yet. That's another school where I just really like the coaching staff. You can also tell they are a team that can handle anything and Florida is top-notch." Those are Chad Jones four favorites at this time. People assume the LSU Tigers are the team to beat but Jones insists he is open. "I am open and I would like to make all of my visits. I am looking at everything to help with my decision and of course baseball will also play an important part." Yes baseball. Jones is a highly touted outfielder and pitcher. Last season he batted .617 and he throws in the low 90s. "I want to play both sports in college so playing for a top-notch college baseball program is important to me. Scouts like me at both positions and so do most college scouts. Right now I think I am a better football player but I see myself having more potential in baseball. Baseball is also my first love. We'll see."
