The West double-dipped at the Alamodome, using the morning to have a live scrimmage and the afternoon to work on special teams. The contrast in the practices, when the west practiced was more relaxed and laid back. This was their one day at full speed contact.
The receivers did an excellent job blocking down field and it's clear that the defensive line is definitely the strength of this team, with the emergence of Luther Davis and Simi Fili being of the hardest guys to block. On top of that, you have the steady play of Everson Griffen, Brian Price and Andre Jones.
Here is a look at the standouts for today.
Defensive Line: Luther Davis was much more relaxed and let his athleticism take over. He can redirect, looked much more fluid and athletic and active today. Myles Wade looked much improved as well.
Linebackers: Travis Lewis, did a nice job from his outside linebacker spot, playing physically and he has that explosion and quickness and that ability. He wraps up well and sticks his face in there and competes. Austin Box, even with his elbow hurting has been tough.
Defensive Backs Stefoin Francois looked much better, and he played a little more corner but is probably a true safety. Looks more athletic and fluid, hes a guy who has benefited from the reps and amount of time he's been here.
Receivers- John Chiles may not be the best receiver, but he brings great effort and he competes and he will knock you. He's physical and athletic and catches the bad balls better than the good balls.
Running back- Joe McKnight, again, had a 70-yard run, and he is one of those guys that every time you watch him, he gets better. He has got some power and he's physical enough that he didn't mind running through the tackles.
Quarterbacks- Nick Fanuzzi had his best practices today. He had good spin on the ball, he throws the ball well at 3/4. He shows good arm strength, and made some nice athletic moves.
Offensive Line: Po'u Palelei moves around and is a big strong guy, with a real powerful upper body and tremendous punch. He does a great job stopping the initial rush with his punch, making him more effective.
Special Teams: David Green did a good job kicking off and kicking PAT's,. Ryan Mallett kicked the ball very well as a punter and may gte a chance to punt on Saturday.
