Alexander Pledges Golden Gophers

Michigan's Maurice Alexander committed to Minnesota during the summer after running a blistering 4.37 40-yard dash. Alexander talks about why he chose the Golden Gophers.

"I committed to Minnesota," said running back Maurice Alexander. "I committed during the summer at the their (Gopher) camp.

"I committed to Minnesota because I had camped their the past two summers and I felt comfortable with the city, the campus and the coaches.

"At the Minnesota camp I ran a 4.37 40-yard dash and I think that was the fastest time of anyone at the camp.

"The coaches watched me run and catch passes and on the last day they offered me a scholarship and I committed. I don't have my official visit set up yet." Alexander, a 5-foot-9, 180-pounder from Southfield, Michigan will start his third season on the varsity for Southfield as they open up the season this afternoon.

Maurice says he didn't think football was in the cards his freshman year.

"To tell the truth, I came to Southfield wanting to play basketball but I tried out for football my freshman year and in my first game on the junior varsity I ran 225 yards and two touchdowns.
,br> "I was moved up to the varsity after that game and I've been starting ever since. I don't play basketball anymore. I'm concentrating on football." Alexander said

Alexander rushed for 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2001. He also returned three kicks for touchdowns. Those numbers were good enough to earn Maurice 2nd team all-state honors.
