A linebacker prospect that had a good summer of camps is
Fred Sparrkman from Columbia (Tenn.) Central High School. Sparkman recorded 158 tackles, 6 sacks and 29 tackles for a loss last season. In game game, he even recorded 21 tackles.
"Fred has a great sense of timing," said Columbia Head Coach Vince Belew. "He has great instincts and is just a natural. And he has a knack for making a big play at the most crucial time. I have never seen anything like it in my 17 years of coaching."
Sparkman has good size at 6-2 and 219 pounds. He runs in the 4.6 range. "I just try and make every tackle and go out there and kill people," said Sparkman. "I want to just go out and be physical."
According to Coach Belew, Sparkman has scholarship offers from
North Carolina, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee
State. Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Tennessee are showing lots of interest.
"I really like Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisville and Alabama. I like the coaches at
Florida and I had a real good time at their camp. I know that I wouldn't mind playing for coach Holtz at
South Carolina. I am still looking into the Gamecocks. At North
Carolina, I think I can get early playing time. I like the defense at Louisville and at
Alabama, I really like Coach (Carl) Torbush.
"Right now, I am just open. I want to take my visits and see what is the best place for me."
Sparkman camped this summer at UNC, Florida and Alabama. He carries a 3.6 grade point
average and has already scored a 20 ACT.
