Davis Makes Surprising Decision
Without having so much seen the campus in Laramie, Monrovia (Calif.) running back James Davis (5-9, 180) still felt that Wyoming was the best school for him. So on Monday night, Davis committed to the Cowboys. "The coaches told me they don't have any running backs committed and as we were talking more in-depth, I ended up saying I want to be a part of the team," said Davis. "I could be a part of the best class they've brought in." On Tuesday evening, Davis welcomed the Wyoming coaching staff and the Cowboys spared no expense, bringing in four coaches, including head coach Joe Glenn to get their biggest commitment from this class. "Wyoming made the best impression on my family and they brought every offensive coach to my house, the receivers coach, the running back coach, the offensive line coach and Coach Glenn," said Davis. "That they wanted me to play running back was a big factor for me. The visit really did answer all of my questions." Davis had several other suitors but most schools saw him as a cornerback, which made the offer from the Cowboys that much more enticing. "I'm actually going to go on my official visit there this weekend," said Davis. "I just got back from Utah State and I loved it and had a great time out there. But the situation wasn't as good as the one at Wyoming and this one worked out best for me." Davis said that the Cowboy coaches told him some of the players they've brought in, and Davis included, would give the Cowboys their best class in Glenn's tenure. However Davis isn't sure he'll play much as a freshman, which is fine with him. "I want to redshirt my first year because they had two junior running backs the last two years, so I'd be third on the depth chart, though if one goes down, I could step in and play. But I don't have a problem with redshirting," said Davis. The season, Davis split time in the backfield with two other running backs, though he was the primary ball-carrier, and finished the season with 1,351 yards on 148 carries and scored 15 touchdowns. He also had 27 receptions for 347 yards and four touchdowns. From his cornerback spot, he had 47 tackles, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
