One of the top big athletes in the state of Texas is now off the board. Beaumont West Brook…
Younger Chavis feeling the pressure
Defensive end Blake Chavis of West Brook high in Beaumont, Texas already has two scholarship offers, but he's feeling a lot of pressure to go to one school in particular. "I have offers from Iowa and Texas A&M and Kansas State and LSU are recruiting me," Chavis said. "I am not going to lie, my whole family wants me to go to A&M. My brother just signed there and its real close to home." The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Chavis says while the Aggies are under strong consideration, he has to carve his own path. "I know that I have to make the best decision for me," Chavis said. "Right now to be honest Miami is probably my top school. I also really like Iowa a lot, I have built up a good relationship with coach Johnson. I may be going to LSU's junior day this weekend too." Though Chavis is keeping things open, don't under estimate the power of family. "My whole family wants me to go to A&M," Chavis said. "My mom especially does. She doesn't want me and Billy to seperate. I hear it from Billy everyday too. I do like A&M and I almost committed, but then I got to thinking about it and realized I had to do the best thing for me. I don't want other schools to think I am a lock to go to A&M and just not recruit me. I am going to listen to what everyone has to say." This past season was Chavis' first season playing football and he was a natural. He earned second team all-district honors. "This was my first year playing football," Chavis said. "I almost quit at the beginning of the year and my coach talked me out of it. I was a basketball guy and thats all I wanted to play. Once I stuck with football I fell in love with it and I am not even worried about basketball now. Right now most schools are recruiting me as a defensive end or a tight end. I think Iowa likes me as a tight end. They told me I could play either, but coach Johnson was just telling me how I would make a great tight end. I like playing tight end better, but I would play defensive end."
