Ryan Dannewitz, the 6-foot-6, 270 pound offensive lineman from San Jacinto Senior (Calif.), says he already has offers (all in writing) from Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, San Diego State and Fresno State. Those are also his favorite programs although he denies any leader. San Jacinto is in the Riverside area of southern California, south of Los Angeles and about 30 minutes from Palm Springs.
"No one school really has an advantage," Dannewitz said. "I'm so open-minded. I don't have any childhood preference. I never had a dream school. I like all my choices. I don't know where I'd go if I had to decide now. I'm also gonna go to Notre Dame when we have spring break, the second week of April.
"The first school to ever offer me was Oregon. That was back in mid-January," he said. "I've been to one of their camps before. They have great facilities and are always in the top 25 programs. I've got family who lives there, my grandparents. They live in Florence, about an hour away from Eugene. That won't be a major factor for me, though they'd really like me to go there.
"Colorado is in a really nice area. That's where I am right now, getting ready to go to their junior day with my parents. They have good academics and are building up their program. They just offered me a scholarship two days ago.
"It's too hot in southern California," he said. "It would be nice to play in a place with colder weather, but that won't be a big deal. I'd play at Arizona too, if I had too, which is very hot. I've already been to all the schools that have offered me except Arizona.
"I've already been to the Fresno State camp three times and I'll go there again this summer. I'll decide later if I'm going to other camps.
"I know a lot of the coaches at Fresno State," he said. "Pat Hill is great. He's an o-line guy and he's always talked with me a lot when I've been at their camps. It's a good place for an offensive lineman to go. They know what they are doing. One of my coaches has a brother (Dan Brown, defensive coordinator) who coaches at Fresno State. But I'm never pressured to go there
"Arizona is in the Pac-10, and those schools are always good," Dannewitz said. They have a good program and a new offensive line coach from Texas Tech (Bill Bedenbaugh).
"San Diego State is in a nice area. Their coaches are great. Coach (Bob) Elliott (asst. head coach) treats me really well. He is the offensive coordinator. But playing close to home is not that important to me. I'll play anywhere.
"I've also been to UCLA and to the USC Junior Day. UCLA has talked more with me and shown more interest, but they haven't indicated if they'll offer yet. They said I have good feet but they'd like it if I got quicker. Right now I run a 5.8 forty.
"These schools all want me for offensive tackle, not offensive guard. I've never played offensive guard. I'm 6-6, 275 or 280 pounds. I'm a good pass blocker and can protect the quarterback's backside. I'm working on drills to keep me low so I can get better leverage.
"I'd like to decide before August or September, if I could," he said. "I don't want to have to worry about my decision while I'm going to school during the season. I've got a 3.4 GPA (core) and a 1310 SAT, which would be a 900 if you only count the two parts. I'm going to take it again to try to get a 1500. Stanford is also interested in me and if I want to go there, I'll have to get my test up."
Dannewitz says he bench presses 290 pounds, power cleans 225 and has a vertical jump of 23".
