Nebraska is exhibiting a return to regional recruiting dominance. In this week’s Midland Recruiting Notebook we recap the two latest Cornhusker commitments and take a look at the latest news from some of the other major prospects around the Midland region.

It is just like the good old days again in Lincoln as the Nebraska Cornhuskers have added two more of the Country’s highest rated offensive linemen when Elkhorn’s (Ne.) Trevor Robinson and Mullen’s (Co.) Bryce Givens committed.

They join previously committed standouts Dan Hoch and Baker Steinkuhler in what will undoubtedly be one of the more dominant offensive line classes in the entire nation once the ink dries on their 2008 Letters of Intent.

Despite the fact he had a plethora of scholarship offers Nebraska resident Trevor Robinson could just not say no to the tradition of the home state school.

“Nebraska is famous for putting out offensive linemen like Dean Steinkuhler and Will Shields. It would be nice to be someone like that,” Robinson informed via a chat session on the BigRedReport.com.

“Every week you grow up, you watch them and it's all around you. Everything is Huskers. There is no other Division One school, so that makes everything funnel into Lincoln. I think that is where a lot of kids see themselves grow up. I always recognized it that it brought a lot of talent over the years.”

Bryce Givens
It is easy to see why Nebraska would have a strong hold over an in-state lineman like Trevor Robinson, but it was somewhat surprising when Denver star Bryce Givens pulled the trigger on a verbal commitment yesterday afternoon.

“Fan support and tradition of Nebraska,” Bryce Givens informed about his decision to commit to the Cornhuskers. “I just wanted to inform the fans of Nebraska that the National Championship is coming back to Nebraska.”

Givens believes that he will fits the mold of what a Cornhusker lineman should be.

“I am mean and I am nasty,” Givens said of what he brings to the table on the field. “I have a real mean streak. With Coach Callahan’s west coast offense it will be a good fit for me. All in all I am just a hard worker and I just get after it.”

Chris Adkins
Chris Adkins has been hearing from an abundance of programs, and he has pulled in his first official scholarship offer. Chris Adkins, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back from Jenks High in Okla., recently received some good news.

“Recruiting has been going pretty good,” Adkins informed. “I am running track and working on getting my speed back up.”

Tulsa has offered me. I am also hearing from Texas Tech, SMU, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas State, Colorado, Tennessee and Arkansas.”

Adkins was honored when the home town Tulsa Golden Hurricane stepped up to the plate with an official offer.

“It felt great,” Adkins said. “That was my first offer, and it was nice to know that there was a division one college scholarship out there for me.”

Adkin’s teammate Tony Gillespie recently gave a commitment to sign with Oklahoma State, s there is no wonder that he is working on him for the Cowboys, but at a school like Jenks there are connections all over.

“Yeah Tony is saying that I need to come up to summer camp with him and prove what I can do,” Adkins reported. “He is not really trying to persuade me one way or another.”

Tim Dial is going to Arkansas and they are recruiting me. I watch them on TV and stuff like that. I am not real familiar with their program other than that. I do know that they run a fun offense.”

Although he is 100 percent open to all the schools showing him interest Adkins reports that Tennessee and Oklahoma State are the two schools that currently sit atop his wish list.

Jameel Owens
Wide receiver Jameel Owens of Muskogee, Okla., said he is getting plenty of phone traffic as you might expect considering he is widely thought of as a Top-100 national prospect. Owens said he is still busy with baseball season, but is also thinking recruiting.

"I'm not anywhere close to deciding on a school," Owens said when asked if he would be in favor of the NCAA having an early signing period for football. "That is something I will think more about this summer. I am not saying I would make an early commitment, but it wouldn't be a bad option to have. I just know right now that I am nowhere close to a decision."

Owens is checking things out especially locally. "I went to the Red-White Game (at Oklahoma) last weekend, and I am going to the Orange-White Game (at Oklahoma State) this Saturday," he said.

Owens is 6-4, 200 pounds and runs a 4.4. He has been a starter for the past two seasons for the Roughers and is such a good athlete that he even filled in some at quarterback last season because of an injury. Make no mistake though, Owens is a brilliant prospect at wide receiver.

Arthur Brown
Arthur Brown, the superior 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker from East High School in Wichita, Kan., says he has approximately 30 scholarship offers, but has not begun to narrow down his choices.

“I feel really blessed,” Brown informed Allen Wallace of Scout.com. “I haven’t even thought where to begin, actually. I just want to do the right thing. I never thought I’d ever be in this position and it’s an honor to be wanted by so many outstanding programs.”

Some of the outstanding programs in the hunt for the star defender include Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Rutgers, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Nebraska, Georgia, Colorado, Washington, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Vanderbilt, UCLA, Clemson, Purdue, Iowa, Iowa State, Miami, North Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, New Mexico State, Kansas State and Alabama.

“I know I have a few more but I can’t remember who they are right now,” he said. “I got my first offer from Kansas State in the last part of September or the first part of October and it’s been non-stop since then.

“I thought I’d get some attention, but I never expected it being like this and coming this fast. I'm trying to take it all in stride and take it slowly. Sometimes when I sit down and look at all these offers from all these great schools, it gets a bit overwhelming. And I know it’s just going to get worse down the line."

Brown says he and his family are going to try to take as many unofficials (visits) as they can this summer. “We’re trying to raise some money right now to take visits to as many schools as possible. It’s pretty expensive to travel around the country looking at colleges though.

“My plan is to narrow down the field to, hopefully, five, after my visits this summer," Brown said. "Then, from there take officials to those five and pick from there. Distance isn’t a big deal to me so I’m looking everywhere.

“I do really like Oklahoma,” he admitted. “I will say they’ll definitely be on my favorites list, in my top five for sure. It’s about two hours from my house, so I know it pretty well already. OU is one of the great programs and has such a great tradition. Coach (Brent) Venables and I talk a lot. He is a great coach and has a great vision for the team. We are really on the same page. I know exactly where he’s coming from.”

Brown plans on graduating early so he wants to commit as early as he can. “I’m not going to rush it, but since I am graduating early, I don’t have a time deadline. Basically, I want to get to school early and get adjusted to college life before the season rolls around…get a jump on my classes and have an edge on everybody else.
