Brice Butler, the 6-foot-3, 189 pound wide receiver from Norcross High School (Ga.), claims to have over 30 offers from such schools as Notre Dame, UCLA, Ole Miss, California, USC, Miami, Alabama, Penn State, LSU, Florida and Georgia.
"I'm not ready to narrow it down yet," said Butler, who had 35 receptions for 680 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior. "I really don't know that much about a lot of the schools to pick any favorites. I'm thinking I'll be able to have a top 10 by this summer."
Butler visited USC this past weekend (April 13). "I just got back from USC," he said. "I had a lot of fun. That's the furthest west I've ever been. I was with T-Mac a lot (running back coach Todd McNair). He's a great coach and we really bonded. I also hung out with Jordan Campbell (linebacker who signed in February) a lot too.
"Coach (Pete) Carroll was great," said Butler, who benches 245 pounds, squats 350 and power cleans 245. "I knew he was a great coach before I went, but I didn't know he had such a great personality. He's really funny. USC has such a great coaching staff. I felt really comfortable around them all."
Butler said he's also taken unofficial trips to Arizona State, LSU, Florida and Florida State. "Arizona State was a great visit too. Coach (Dennis) Erickson is a great guy. I was really impressed with his coaching staff too. He is really doing a lot with that program. They have the potential to be in the top ten for sure. Coach Erickson has made a lot of changes that are going to be really good.
"LSU was my first unofficial," Butler said. "The education is really good there. I had a good talk with Coach (Les) Miles when I was there about how much they need receivers and how I'd have a chance to start as a true freshman if I went there. I think I'm going to take an official visit there too.
"I took a visit to Florida State a week after LSU," he said. "They really have a good program there and they're just going to get better since they've brought back all their coaches they had from five or ten years ago. They just need players now and they're getting them. Coach (Bobby) Bowden is really bringing the program back around and they'll definitely be contenders soon.
"I just went to Florida about two weeks ago," Butler said. "I got to meet Coach (Urban) Meyer and some of the other coaches. He was telling me how they need an action receiver. They have the speed with Percy Harvin, but they need a big go-to guy, like me. I was really impressed with their facilities also."
Butler says he going to try and visit as many schools as he can this summer. "I know I won't be able to visit them all, but I just want to learn as much about as many as I can before I start eliminating them.
"The most important thing to me is hitting it off with the coach," Butler said. "Feeling comfortable with the coaching staff is huge. Also, I want to get a good education and, of course, play as early as I can. If I have to redshirt, I don't mind, but I'd rather not.
"I'm a good route-runner. DB's aren't as good as they used to be, so I find myself open a lot. I have a lot of speed off the line.
"I need to work on my strength and my hands," he added. "You can never be too good at anything. There's always room for improvement."
Butler reports a 3.0 core GPA and a 1350 SAT score (new version).
