DeAndre Brown (WR, Ocean Springs, MS) - Mississippi's top '08 prospect,
according to scout.com's newest released rankings, is set to attend the Scout.com
All-American combine in New Orleans on Saturday.
|
"I am just looking
forward to being in the combine atmosphere again," added DeAndre Brown. "The
last one I went to was in Baton Rouge last year. I did not put up the numbers
that I had hoped. I ran like a 4.6 forty but I came in with a sprained ankle.
I am running in the 4.4's now, so I am looking to put up some good numbers."
The
6' 4", 190 pound receiver had a good senior campaign but looks for an even
better one this year.
"I had to keep the team on my shoulders and
contribute every game and be the leader. We ended up 8-5, but next year it will
be a better year for us."
Brown had 21 catches for 250 yards and 7
TD's. He also put up some great rushing numbers as he carried the ball 12 times
for 313 yards and 4 TD's. DeAndre contributed in the return game by taking back
2 to the house.
"I was named 2nd Team All-State by the Clarion
Ledger, and I was named 1st Team All-District and 2nd Team All-Coast."
Brown
talks about his strengths on the field.
"I think my strengths are
catching the ball well in tight spaces, running good routes, and getting off of
jams good."
And what does he need to work on?
"I say I
am pretty fast and quick, but I need to be a little more quicker than I am, and
a little more physical."
DeAndre is also a star on the court.
"I
averaged 16 pts and 7 rebounds a game last year. I was named All-South in Mississippi."
Is
basketball or football Brown's first love?
"Football. My dad was a
high school All-American in Little Rock growing up, so he has always pushed me
towards football because he was a basketball person. And my cousins all played
football, so we were always out in the yard playing football. It is just more
natural for me in football."
Colleges from across the nation started
calling the prospects on Monday for the first time this Spring; who was the first
coach to call?
"Well, Coach Dunn from Auburn was the first to talk
to me. He told me that he was coming down to see me next week. He always tells
me how much I can help their program and that I could come in there as a freshman
and be an impact player. Coach Hughes from Ole Miss talked to my mother Monday
morning while I was at school. He was telling her how I could help their program,
and if I stayed in state, they would take care of me. Nobody called me on Tuesday.
Those are the only two colleges that have called this week."
DeAndre
has been offered by virtually every big time program in the country, but he discusses
the colleges that he is the most interested in.
"My top 5 right now
are Florida, LSU, South Carolina, Auburn, and Tennessee. Right now those are the
main ones giving me the most interest at this minute."
Brown talks
about what he likes in each school.
Florida
- "Probably their winning tradition, and I really like Coaches Myers and
Gonzalos."
LSU - "I have a teammate
that plays for them, Richard Dickson. Coach Henson recruited this area when they
were recruiting Richard, so I have known him for a while. We have a real good
relationship. Right now, LSU is very high on my list."
South
Carolina - "I like Coach Spurrier. I have followed him since he was
at Florida. I like how he airs the ball out."
Auburn
- "I really do not know too much about Auburn. I just have been building
a real good relationship with Coach Dunn and Knox."
Tennessee
- "I grew up watching Peyton Manning. I just like their winning tradition,
and I have also known Coach Luke since he was at Ole Miss."
Where
do the Mississippi schools stand with DeAndre?
USM - "I have not really
talked to anybody from USM, so I do not know where they stand. I would be interested
in them, but I am waiting on one of them to call me."
Ole
Miss - "Ole Miss is in my Top 10. I really do not have a certain number
for them, but they are showing me a lot of interest. I think they will be a big
part of my decision in the end."
MSU
- "Right now, wow, MSU is, well, I can't really say. They are fair right
now. I have been in contact with Coach Washington and went up there recently to
check out their campus, but yea, they are just fair. I would not put them in my
Top 10."
When it comes decision time; it will be pretty simple for
this National 100 member.
"I just want to go some where I can come
in and help and feel at home."
DeAndre is uncertain about his grade
status and will need to retake the ACT test.
